The release of a new wine varietal is an exciting event at any winery. From the initial harvest through the handcrafted winemaking process, label development, and more, the entire team is engaged in the rollout.

Scott Harvey Wines is pleased to present their new creation, the 2021 Jana Winery Verdelho, recently released in June 2022. This superb new white wine celebrates its origin in one of Scott and Jana Harvey’s favorite destinations, Portugal. This new wine can be enjoyed during one of the best wine tasting sessions at the Amador County Tasting Room or one of the other Scott Harvey tasting locations.

Introducing 2021 Jana Verdelho

While Verdelho grapes are now widely cultivated in other parts of the world, the traditional home of Verdelho wines happens to be on the Portuguese Islands of Madeira, situated southwest of the European mainland in the North Atlantic.

However, many vintners and winemakers across the globe have recently achieved notable success converting the Verdelho grapes into a dry white varietal that offers a most pleasing accompaniment for many Asian recipes as well as light chicken or pork dishes.

Scott Harvey Amador County Verdelho Production

Verdelho grape vines thrive in warmer climates that perfectly suit Amador County’s growing conditions. The vineyard supplying the raw material for the Jana Verdelho production happens to be situated on a west-facing mountain slope that overlooks the central valley of Mt. Diablo. In the daytime, the vineyards receive a healthy share of direct sunlight, cooled in the evening by the Delta breezes followed by the cold early morning air currents from the Sierra Mountains.

In the vineyard, the Verdelho grapes tend to bud and ripen early, are well-suited to tolerate periods of drought, and can develop nicely in the benign hotter climates of California. By maturing early, these thick-skinned gapes also avoid late-season mildew and other potentially harmful afflictions.

Sampling the 2021 Jana Verdelho

Grapes for the 2021 Jana Verdelho were sourced entirely from the Shenandoah Valley in Amador County, California. This recent release consists of 92% DeWitt Vineyard Verdelho grapes and 8% Estate grown Muscat Canelli. The grapes were picked when ripe but not over ripe to retain the flavorful balance in the final wine.

Reflecting a light, crisp, dry style, the finished wine suggests a rich, full-bodied flavor with hints of toasted sesame seeds, ripe apricots, citrus, and melon.

The wine offers minerality on the back and finishes with a firm acid structure.
