Recently, someone mentioned, “When we go out, my friends and I greatly favor cocktails over wine. The sugar content in wine leaves us feeling awful the following day.”

That didn’t make any sense.  Knowing that my friend only drinks dry wine, there is very little sugar in wine.  If you’ve ever thought of something similar, here’s an example of sugar in alcoholic drinks:

Sugar content for Cocktails vs. Wine

Dry Wine – 1-2 grams of sugar in a 5 oz. glass

Margarita – 10-30 grams of sugar, depending on the mixes
Moscow Mule – 7-15 grams, depending on the amount of ginger beer.  Vodka and lime contribute little
Mojito – 15-25 grams, depending on the sugar cube or simple syrup added
Old Fashioned – 5-10 grams of sugar.  Once again, it is dependent on the cube or simple syrup

Low-sugar cocktails:

Gin & Tonic with Diet Tonic – 0 grams.  If using regular tonic, you’re looking at 15 grams
Dry Martini – 0-1 grams
Whiskey/Bourbon Neat 0 grams
Shot of Tequila0 grams

If you’re mindful of the sugar content in your beverages, a glass of wine may seem like an optimal choice.
