Join me, Scott Harvey, to learn, taste, and celebrate the vivacity of the Original Grandpère Vineyard (OGP) also known as Vineyard 1869. This vineyard was planted in the year 1869 (hence the name) and is considered the oldest documented Zinfandel vineyard in the Americas! Every time I walk the vineyard, I think about the lives of the people that were here before.
During this vertical wine experience we will travel back in time 152 years to learn of the rich history of the Sierra Foothill Mountains, especially our 1869 Vineyard. Our wine tasting experience will begin in the year 2010 as we swirl, smell, and sip on the exquisite 1869 (2010) vintage wine. We will then walk to the year 2013 to savor the great taste of 1869 (2013) vintage and finally we'll end our time travels by hopping to the year 2014 to sip the 1869 (2014) vintage. As we sip each vintage, I will share with you its story.
Much like our personal lives, each year may feel different based on our experiences. Some years are sweet, bitter, or somewhere in between. The same occurs with grapes. Each vintage tells the story of the grape's environment - earth, air, water, sunlight.
I make this grape varietal in the old world style of balanced wine making. I want the wine to express the Amador Zinfandel terroir with a good balance of fruit, French oak, structural tannins, and medium alcohol. The wine is made in the California Claret style reminiscent of the balanced Zinfandels produced back in the 60s and 70s. Briary varietal, layered Zinfandel with flavors of blackberry, fig, pomegranate, violets and a balanced, fleshy center with hints of coffee and bright currants. Old Vine complexity with first growth quality.
Join me on this fun, interesting, and delicious journey! During the event, we'll also be giving away some 1869 scented candles and 1869 puzzels as prizes to fun trivia questions based on information provided.
