Halloween marks the start of the holiday season, and boy are we in the spirit! At the winery we tend to have quite a few empty wine bottles left over at the end of the week, not to mention used corks. Generally we recycle these, but this year we had a different idea…we’re “upcycling” them! At the end of our blog you can download our free Guide to Making Easy Upcycled Halloween Decorations.
Halloween is one of my favorite holidays. I love the pumpkins, ghosts, spider webs and other creepy and kooky decorations. Although I’m generally not a crafter by nature (unless you count crafting HTML and spreadsheets), this year someone cast the “crafters spell” on me and I found myself channeling my inner Martha Stewart and was possessed to make Halloween decorations using wine bottles and corks.
After a daunting trip to JoAnn’s Fabric and Craft, I walked out with everything I needed to make some great upcycled Halloween decorations. Luckily, all of the supplies I needed required very little “know how” and I felt confident I could accomplish the project that appeared so vividly in my head (and on Pinterest).
Armed with Sharpie Paint Pens, gold glitter paint, stencils, a paint brush, some E6000 glue, plus a bunch of other items, I headed home to let out my crafting spirit.
Fortunately, I had the foresight to prep my wine bottles (removed the labels and excess adhesive), before I went shopping so I didn’t get distracted or discouraged when I returned home. Seeing those clean bottles there on the counter, I was drawn in by their Siren song and blank glass, enticing me to get creative.
Over the course of about four days, I was able to make, with some success I might add, a wine bottle pumpkin, seven wine bottle ghosts, a wine bottle mummy, five wine bottle spider webs, a set of “Boo” wine bottle candle holders, a set of candy corn wine bottle vases and a cork pumpkin. Believe me, I think I exorcised that “crafters” spirit after all.
As you may surmise, I’m not known to be a “crafty” person. Even my husband thought someone had taken a little piece of my mind (he’s a zombie believer) when he saw all of my supplies and 2 cases of empty wine bottles. But even this “not-so-crafty” gal was able to create some great Halloween decorations using corks, empty wine bottles and a few inexpensive crafting supplies. If I can do it…anyone can! Guess I better start thinking about Christmas decorations.
